Nel corso dei mesi successivi, la luminosità del <em>flare</em> aumentò per poi divenire sempre più debole. Oggi, dopo 350 anni, sono stati pubblicati circa 50 milioni di articoli scientifici e numerosi libri nel campo delle scienze naturali, fisiche e matematiche al punto che uno studente moderno di un qualunque liceo è in grado, probabilmente, di possedere una conoscenza scientifica superiore rispetto allo scienziato inglese. Tuttavia, gli orologi all'atomo di cesio non sono accurati nel lungo termine.
